Book titles on the New York Times Best Sellers list are selected each month for STC libraries.  The books are highlighted in each campus library and may be checked out by any STC library user.  Check available titles on the list and request any title that is not housed in your campus library by placing a hold on the item record in Discovery Search or by submitting a Campus to Campus request.  The book will be delivered to your campus as soon as it is available.

South Texas College Library and Art Department partner to offer exhibits in Rio Grande City.

Q & A and Reception: September 26th at 11:30 a.m.

South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery and Art Department partner to bring rotating exhibits and art talks to the Starr County region. In this first collaboration, local artist Jose Suarez displays nine of his paintings in the upstairs corridor gallery of the STC Starr County Academic Building.

Suarez attended South Texas College after graduation from Juarez-Lincoln High School in La Joya and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In a baroque style that is rich in realism and dramatic lighting, Suarez paints theatrical scenes inspired by his life in the Rio Grande Valley.

A talk with the artist will take place on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 11:30 AM at the Starr County Campus Academic Building E, 142 FM 3167 in Rio Grande City, TX. Light refreshments will be provided. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibit opened on Sept. 10th and runs through Dec. 6, 2019.

New exhibition at STC’s Weslaco campus explores identity between two cultures.

Artist Lecture and Reception: Oct. 21, 2019 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The South Texas College Mid-Valley Library Art Gallery presents “Fragmentos y Suturas,” an art exhibition featuring artwork by José Villalobos.

The exhibit opens on Thursday, September 5th and will be available to view until October 21, 2019, at the STC Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery, Building E 1.210 located at 400 N Border in Weslaco, TX.

José Villalobos grew up in El Paso, Texas. In his artwork, Villalobos transforms seemingly everyday objects into artwork that traverses gender and orientation as it exists living between two cultures.

José Villalobos will give a lecture about his work on Monday, October 21, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the STC Mid-Valley Campus Library. A performance and reception will follow that same evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The exhibition, artist talk, and reception are free and open to the public.

STC’s Technology Campus Library to host a metalworking exhibit.

Artist Lecture and Reception: November 7th at 6 p.m.

South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery presents “Facets,” an exhibit featuring a group of artists who work in wearable art and petite sculpture. The artwork in this show is made from different materials and moves away from the idea of commercial jewelry and pushes towards an investigation contemporary art.

This exhibit will be on view September 3 through December 6, 2019, at STC’s Technology Campus Library and will feature jewelry from artists: Gloria Valentina Reyes, Valeria Baltazar, Oscar O. Padrón., Ruxanda Musunoi, and Erica Marie Briones.

The artists will be available for questions during the reception on November 7th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m at the Technology Campus Library Art Gallery located at 3700 W. Military Hwy, Bldg. A in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.

Do you need an article on past and present indigenous cultures (Hispanic, Latin American, and the Caribbean Basin)? Check out our PRISMA database for those research needs. PRISMA (Publicaciones y Revistas Sociales y Humanísticas) is a complete reference resource providing students and faculty full-text scholarly journals covering all aspects of Hispanic Studies. Students and faculty can use PRISMA when doing research on a variety of social science or humanities topics from current economic indicators to politics and society to Hispanic theatre. PRISMA offers content in three languages — Spanish, Portuguese, and English.

Some of the full-text journals located in PRISMA include América Latina Hoy, Boletín Americanista, Historia, Journal of Eastern Caribbean Studies, and Revista Hispánica Moderna.
