South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery, together with the college’s Visual and Performing Arts Department, brings the Rio Grande Valley its tenth annual ceramics exhibition and workshop, “Constants and Variables: A South Texas Ceramic Showdown.” All activities are free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on view from June 16 to July 25, 2016, at the college’s Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery and at the Art Building B Gallery, located at 3201 West Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. The event includes a full display of ceramic work by distinguished Texas ceramicists Jim Bob Salazar and Pat Johnson as well as ceramic works by students and professors from 13 regional universities and community colleges.

A three-day ceramics conference will begin with an opening reception on June 16 at the Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery and the Art Building B Gallery from 6-8 p.m. The conference will continue with Ceramic Demonstrations on June 17 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1:30 – 4:30 p.m., and June 18 at 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at STC’s Pecan Campus Art Building (Bldg. B) Ceramics Lab, Room 115. Art talks will be held on Saturday, June 18 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the same location.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to continue with our annual Ceramic Showdown that began informally in 2007 at South Texas College,” said Chris Leonard, STC ceramics instructor and exhibit/conference organizer. “This year we are fortunate to have a pair of Texas based artists with Pat Johnson returning with her politically powerful work and paired with extraordinarily talented thrower, Jim Bob Salazar. This should be an informative event in terms of content, top flight form and process, as well as viewers being able to see the connections that artists decide to make in and outside of the studio.”

Jim Bob Salazar received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas in Denton. In 1998, he moved to Alpine, Texas where he taught ceramics, along with sculpture, photography and design, for nearly fifteen years near Big Bend National Park at Sul Ross State University. In 2013, he decided to retire from teaching and pursue pottery full time. Salazar creates highly skilled, functional pottery and is an active exhibitor in Texas, participating in over 25 art festivals a year.

Pat Johnson has been working in clay for over 40 years. About her work, Johnson says, “Creating art helps me clarify what I feel and believe. Be it a social, political statement or a personal one.” Her work has been featured in many solo and group shows in Texas including the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, D. Berman Gallery in Austin and Hooks-Epstein Gallery in Houston as well as during numerous ceramic annual conferences. In addition to her extensive studio practice and exhibit history, Johnson has been commissioned for ceramic tile murals for the College Station Public Library, Monument Hill State Park, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and other murals in Longview, Waco and Austin. She has won awards from the Texas Clay Artist Association and her work is included in the book 500 Tiles: An Inspiring Collection of International Work.

Impressionistic paintings bring summer to life at the STC Pecan Campus

The South Texas College Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery is proud to present “Portraits of Summer”, an exhibit of paintings by Robert Andes. The exhibit will be on view from June 1st to July 25th, 2016, on the first floor of the STC Pecan Campus Library. On Thursday, June 16th there will be an art talk and exhibit reception from 6-8 p.m. where Robert Andes will discuss his work, inspiration, and process. The exhibit will run in conjunction with the 10th Annual South Texas Ceramic Showdown which will also have its opening reception on the same day and place. The South Texas College Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery is located at 3201 West Pecan Boulevard, Bldg. F, in McAllen. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Robert Andes holds his M.F.A. in Painting from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Rich in light, his body of work parallels the figurative work explored by late 19th century impressionist painters which he applies to casual contemporary scenes: a South Texas beach, a market in New Mexico, or a lunch date in Paris.  The paintings in this exhibit excel at capturing and radiating the warm light of the summer that directly appeal to the viewer’s senses and imagination. Of his work, Andes says, “I seek to convey a sense of silent contemplation, emotion without words.” Andes is a native of New Hampshire and a painting instructor at Texas Southmost College in Brownsville, Texas.

“Robert Andes’ skill of capturing everyday moments and his keen attention to light in his composition is superb.” Said Gina Otvos, Art Gallery Associate at South Texas College. “His work is sure to inspire both aspiring and professional artists as well as bring a warm, refreshing summer sensation to the South Texas College Library.”

National Library Week @ STC 2016 Open House

The South Texas College Library joins libraries nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

 

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.

 

“Service to the South Texas College community has always been the focus of the library,” said Cody Gregg, Dean of Library and Learning Support Services. “While this aspect has never changed, libraries have grown and evolved in how they provide for the needs of every member of their community.”

The South Texas College Library is celebrating National Library Week by hosting Open House events at each campus library. The events are free and open to the public.

On April 13 from11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at STC’s Technology Campus Library located at 3700 W. Military Highway in McAllen, attendees will enjoy a screening of the movie The 33, as well as games, drawings, popcorn and snacks.

On April 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 1: 00 p.m. at the college’s Mid-Valley Campus Library located at 400 N. Border in Weslaco, events will include a screening of the movie The Good Dinosaur, pictures with college mascot Jerry the Jaguar, popcorn and snacks, a photo booth, a contest, and a “Pursuing Education” Fair.

On April 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Starr County Campus Library located at 142 FM 3167 in Rio Grande City, activities include the movie showing of Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos, popcorn and snacks, games, Jerry the Jaguar, a photo both and information tables.

On April 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at STC’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus Library located at 1101 E. Vermont in McAllen, attendees will be treated to the movie showing of The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2, giveaways, popcorn and snacks, games, scavenger hunt, and information tables.

On April 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at STC’s Pecan Campus Library located at 3201 West Pecan Boulevard in McAllen, festivities will include an information fair, a scavenger hunt with prizes, and the showing of Star Wars the Force Awakens, as well as popcorn and snacks, games, and a photo-booth.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.

She has written the collection A Crown for Gumecindo and A Tongue in the Mouth of the Dying, which was the winner of the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize. In addition, Guerrero’s chapbook, Babies Under the Skin, won the Panhandler Publishing Award. Her poetry and critical works have also appeared in various journals and magazines.

“Inside Out”  is about emotions run wild in the mind of a little girl who is uprooted from her peaceful life in the Midwest and forced to move to San Francisco in this Pixar adventure from director Pete Docter (Up, Monsters Inc.). Young Riley was perfectly content with her life when her father landed a new job in San Francisco, and the family moved across the country. Now, as Riley prepares to navigate a new city and attend a new school, her emotional headquarters becomes a hot bed of activity. As Joy (voice of Amy Poehler) attempts to keep Riley feeling happy and positive about the move, other emotions like Fear (voice of Bill Hader), Anger (voice of Lewis Black), Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) make the transition a bit more complicated. “Southern Exposures” is composed by award-winning photographs from the Valley Land Fund Southern Exposures Photo Contest.

The South Texas College Library Art Gallery presents “Southern Exposures” as a means to promote a way to create awareness of wildlife that exists in the Rio Grande Valley and ultimately to add value to that wildlife.

South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery partners with the college’s Visual Art Department and the University of Texas-Pan American in order to present the RGV’s eighth annual ceramics exhibition and conference, “Challenging Conventions: A South Texas Ceramic Showdown.” The full exhibition includes collaborative pieces from 12 universities and community colleges. The pieces will be at both the STC Library and UTPA’s Visual Art Gallery.

The exhibit will be on view from June 11-August 7, 2015. A special ceramic art talk by, Tom Belden of Central Arizona College and Gary Greenberg Clarion University of Pennsylvania, will take place on Thursday, June 11 from 5-6 p.m. just before the opening reception which is being held from 6-8 p.m. at STC’s Pecan Campus Library, located at 3201 West Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. The following day at UTPA there will be a free, two-day conference and workshop taking place on Friday, June 12 and ending Saturday, June 13 at UTPA’s Visual Arts Building Ceramics Lab. All activities are free and open to the public.

“We are back in action for our fifth go around of ceramic collaboration. There are a number of variables that we are putting in place with our own facilities being upgraded here at STC this summer so we are collaborating with UTPA to put on the show and workshop,” said Chris Leonard, STC ceramics instructor and exhibit/workshop organizer. “People across the state and even the nation are putting things in place and into kilns in order to make the show happen very soon.”

The conference includes clay demonstrations and talks by nationally recognized and distinguished ceramic artists, Tom Belden of Central Arizona College and Gary Greenberg of Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Both ceramicists are M.F.A. graduates of Arizona State University, and they bring with them over 40 years of experience exhibiting nationwide, teaching, and working in the medium. Among Tom Belden’s vast accomplishments, he was instrumental in establishing Central Arizona College’s Gallery, and he has served as gallery director and curator for the past fourteen years at Central Arizona College. Gary Greenberg’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the University of Missouri, Adams State College in Colorado and the Stretch Gallery in North Carolina to name a few. Greenberg serves as director of Disco Inferno, the tri-annual firings of the Clarion University wood-fired, anagama kiln.

“We are continuing with a paired show format; plus the institutional invite will be back along with a pair of visiting artists, Belden and Greenberg.” Leonard said. “It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be educational. It’s going to open some eyes and minds.”

South Texas College’s Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery presents “Rostros” (Faces) where his characters come from the world of modeling and bullfighting. The decision to use these sources was easy and obvious to find beauty in their personality, as well as their gestures and in their facial structures. The exhibit opens, Thursday, February 5, 2015 and will be on view through May 15, 2015. The Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery is located at 3201 W. Pecan, 2nd Floor, McAllen, Texas. Admission is free and open to the public.

Mr. Ricardo Benavides is a graduate of The University of Texas Pan American where he received a Bachelor’s of Fine Art in 2006. In 2014 he obtained his Masters of Fine Arts from at the University of Texas Pan American.

The exhibit displays paintings of acrylic and oil. Mr. Benavidez’ objective with this exhibit is for the viewers to enjoy the beauty of his characters, sensuality and at the same time the post modern aesthetic that he has tried to capture in his series entitled “Rostros” (Faces).
