National Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month which is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. The Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, whether we realize it or not. National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity, provide them with tools and resources needed to stay safe online, and increase the resiliency of the Nation in the event of a cyber incident.

Please join us Thursday, October 19 at 10 am at the Technology Campus Auditorium for a lecture entitled “The State of Cyber Security” given by Mr. Victor Gonzalez, Chief Information Security Officer at South Texas College.  If you missed his lecture in the morning, there will be another opportunity to hear him speak at the Pecan Campus Library in F-102 at 2pm.

Inspired by the Deep Blue

South Texas College exhibits work by UTRGV Master of Fine Arts Candidate

South Texas College’s Technology Campus Library presents an exhibit, “Inspired by the Deep Blue,” with Natalia Soto. The exhibit opens Tuesday, September 6 and will be on view through Friday, December 8, 2017. An artist lecture will be held at 6 p.m. at STC’s Technology Campus Library on November 14. The library is located at 3700 W. Military Hwy. in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.

Natalia Soto Sanchez is an active artist with the Women of Action Collective and is in her last semester of the MFA program at UTRGV. In this exhibit of drawings, lithographs, and collage, Soto pays close attention to line detail in a series of fantastical underwater images.

STC’s Library Art Gallery Program exhibits regional, national and international artwork, explores new visions and theories of creativity, and introduces innovative artistic expressions to the South Texas region.

Emerging Artists: New Additions to the Collection

STC’s Library Art Gallery celebrates new additions to the college’s Permanent Art Collection with an exhibit that features new artists in Texas (and one from California). The exhibit will be on view at the Technology Campus June 5 through August 11, 2017. The STC Technology Campus Library Art Gallery is located at 3700 W. Military Hwy. in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibit features works by artists who have exhibited and donated within the last two years at one of the college’s four library art galleries throughout the Rio Grande Valley in Hidalgo and Starr counties. Artists include Coco Rico, Xavier Perez, Manny Chapa, Xochi Solis, Jessie Rodriguez, Conrado Gonzalez, and Jesse Burciaga.

“It’s always interesting to be able to bring together our donated works of art into one exhibit,” said Max Garcia, South Texas College Librarian. “It creates a type of visual timeline of what we have exhibited. I’m excited to see the connections we see with these new artists.”

South Texas College Libraries Open House 2017

The South Texas College Library joins libraries nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.

“Service to the South Texas College community has always been the focus of the library,” said Cody Gregg, Dean of Library and Learning Support Services. “While this aspect has never changed, libraries have grown and evolved in how they provide for the needs of every member of their community.”

The South Texas College Library is celebrating National Library Week by hosting Open House events at each campus library. The events are free and open to the public.

 

 

On April 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at STC’s Technology Campus Library located at 3700 W. Military Highway in McAllen, attendees will enjoy a screening of the movie Furious 7, as well as a photo booth, raffle, snacks and drinks.

On April 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at STC’s Nursing & Allied Health Campus Library located at 1101 E. Vermont Avenue in McAllen, attendees will enjoy a screening of the movie Doctor Strange, as well a raffle, popcorn, drinks and snacks.

Jeff Nichols wrote and directed this biopic about Virginian interracial couple Richard and Mildred Loving who were sentenced to prison in 1958 for violating the state’s laws against miscegenation. The Loving’s decided to fight back, and their case led to a landmark Supreme Court decision that struck down laws prohibiting interracial marriage.

Young Chicago lawyers Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama spend a sweltering summer afternoon visiting the art museum, eating lunch together, watching Do The Right Thing, getting some ice cream and sharing a first kiss in this dramatization of the President and First Lady’s fateful first date.

 

Think like a Man

Based on Steve Harvey’s best-selling book, Think Like a Man follows four interconnected and diverse men whose love lives are shaken up after the ladies they are pursing buy Harvey’s book and start taking his advice to heart. When the band of brothers realize they have been betrayed by one of their own, they conspire to use the book’s insider information to turn the table and teach the woman a lesson of their own.

 

The Good Lie

A group of Sudanese refugees given the chance to resettle in America arrive in Kansas City, Missouri, where their encounter with an employment agency counselor forever changes all of their lives.

Carlos Ochoa is a graduate of the UTRGV Studio Art Program. In his recent Vogue series, he paints over models to embellish the commercial ideal of beauty by manipulating ads found within Vogue magazines. In his newest Vogue series, the viewer is left to interpret the altered art form as well as their own perspective on how companies sell their products by misusing the viewer’s notion of beauty.

MCALLEN, TX (November 1, 2016) -South Texas College’s Technology Campus Library presents “Illustrating Their World,” featuring illustrations by Valley artists Jessie Rodriguez and Roni Cortez.

An artist lecture and reception will be held at 6 p.m. on November 3 at STC’s Technology Campus Library. The library is located at 3700 W. Military Hwy in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public. . The exhibit opened Tuesday, September 6, and will be viewable to the public through Friday, December 2, 2016.

STC’s Library Art Gallery Program exhibits regional, national and international artwork, explores new visions and theories of creativity, and introduces innovative artistic expressions to the South Texas region.

The Valley artists being exhibited produce dynamic illustrations that showcase their expertise in a wide range of styles.

“In this exhibit, we see a new generation of professional artist. Through hand-drawn illustration, both of these artists achieve highly skilled and refined drawings that interact with a storyline much like a comic book,” says Gina Otvos, STC Art Gallery Associate. “We are excited to support these emerging artists–one a former student of STC–and look forward to being transported into their illustrated, imaginative world.”

Roni Cortez and Jessie Rodriguez recently graduated from the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with an emphasis in Drawing.

Rodriguez is a freelance illustrator residing in Pharr, Texas, and is known for his unique style of dry brush ink and watercolor combined in a character series. Roni Cortez’s illustrated series combines two illustrated characters that were created separately, but together these characters create a new story. Roni only relies on black and white ink to emphasize mystery.
