Jovita Gonzalez Lecture Series Presents: Dr. Brenda Sendejo

Writer and scholar Dr. Brenda Sendejo will be visiting South Texas College this March during our Jovita Gonzalez Lecture Series.

Dr. Sendejo will visit three of South Texas College’s campuses, starting with a visit on March 4, 2020, at 1:00 pm, she will be at the Mid-Valley Campus Library, then she will visit Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room at 6:00 pm. On March 5, 2020 at 10:00 am, Dr. Sendejo will conclude her visit at the Starr County Campus Library.

Dr. Sendejo is a Chicana/Tejana feminist anthropologist who researches spiritual activism and the Chicana feminist movement in Texas. Her book manuscript in progress is titled, The Face of God Has Changed: Chicana Feminism and the Politics of Spirituality in the Borderlands. Sendejo employs feminist and decolonial pedagogies and methodologies as an educator-scholar and Director of the Latina History Project, an intergenerational oral history/digital archival project that documents Chicana/Latina feminism and activism in Texas since the 1960s. She is a contributor to Chicana Movidas: New Narratives of Activism and Feminism in the Movement Era, edited by Maylei Blackwell, Maria Cotera, and Dionne Espinoza (UT Press, 2018). In that essay Sendejo examines the intellectual genealogy of Chicana feminism and its roots in Austin, Texas. Sendejo currently serves as Associate Professor and Chair of Feminist Studies at Southwestern University, and affiliate faculty in Anthropology, Latin American and Border Studies, and Race and Ethnicity Studies

Her research explores how prominent Mexican American writers of Mexican descent, such as Jovita González, used literature to respond to the dominative history of the United States.

South Texas College Library looks at impact of mentorship in new exhibition

The South Texas College Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery, in collaboration with STC’s Visual Art Department, presents an exhibition that encompasses both floors of the STC Library featuring original work by the late Bruno Andrade, curated by his son Trey Andrade.

The Gallery proudly presents “Bruno: The Legacy of an Artist – Educator”, an exhibit that began in January and lasting until February 27, 2020.

There will be a closing reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the South Texas College Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery located at 3201 W. Pecan Blvd. on Thursday, Feb. 27th in McAllen. Rolando Reyna and Joe Peña will lead a lecture at 10 a.m. in the STC Library Rainbow Room and a workshop at 1 p.m. in the Art Building, B113. All events are free and open to the public.

“Bruno: The Legacy of an Artist – Educator,” is also comprised by a simultaneous exhibition of artwork by Andrade’s former students, most of whom have gone on to be professional artists themselves. Their work will be exhibited on the first floor of the library, and offers insight into the relationship of mentors and the lasting impact of instructors.

STC Visual Art Professors, Luis Corpus and Richard Smith, were both students of Andrade at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Corpus attending from 2006-2009, and Smith from 1986-89.

“Acknowledging Bruno’s impact is a reflection upon our own successes and the foundation that education provides in general,” said Corpus, who is now Art Department Chair and art instructor at South Texas College.

“Bruno showed me how to find my voice through paint,” Smith said about the late professor.

Do they speak only through sugar skulls and the movie “Coco”, or can they tell Mexican Americans where they’re going by showing them where they’ve been?  Mr. Gilberto Reyes Jr, will be presenting.

MCALLEN, TEXAS (Oct. 9, 2019) South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery proudly presents Borderígena, an exhibit with layered mixed-media paintings by Jesus De La Rosa.  De La Rosa was raised in the Rio Grande Valley and Nuevo Progreso, Mexico.  He spent his early life traveling across the U.S/Mexico border as a result of his parents working in Mexico and living in Texas. His borderland experience plays a pivotal role in his art practice.  De La Rosa earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and a Master of Fine Arts from The Ohio State University at Columbus, where he was awarded a Graduate Enrichment Fellowship. As an Associate Professor of Art at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, De La Rosa teaches introductory and advanced courses in printmaking and graphic design.

Borderígena will be located on the first floor of the Pecan Library Art Gallery, inside Building F.

Also running concurrently is Our Lady of Guadalupe Community Exhibit.  The group exhibit will feature many artwork depictions inspired by La Virgen de Guadalupe.  The purpose of this exhibition is to allow the community to share their artistic vision of La Virgen de Guadalupe as a cultural icon for her day of apparition on December 12.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Community Exhibit will be located on the 2nd floor of the Pecan Library Art Gallery.

Both exhibits open Oct. 17 and run through December 12, 2019.

On Oct. 17, 2019, there will be an opening art talk by Jesus de la Rosa from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Following the artist talk, a second lecture “Christian Art Through the Ages” will be presented by Patricia Ballinger from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Both lectures will be held in the Pecan Library Rainbow Room.  Later in the evening, a reception for both exhibitions will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery.  The exhibits are located at 3201 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.

New photography exhibit by a former STC student explores themes of migration.

Artist Lecture and Reception: Oct. 3, 2019 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The South Texas College Library Art Gallery presents “Viacrucis,” an art exhibition featuring photographs by Verónica Gabriela Cárdenas and paintings by Pedro Perez.

Cárdenas is a documentary photographer and former South Texas College Architectural Drafting and Language Arts student. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, The Texas Tribune, and TIME exploring themes of migration and social justice. In this exhibition, Cárdenas documents the journey made by Central American asylum seekers.

Cárdenas will give a lecture about her photojournalism on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the STC Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room, F224.

The exhibit opened on Aug. 27, and will be available to view until October 3, 2019, at the STC Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery, Building F-226 located at 3201 West Pecan Boulevard in McAllen, Texas.

Also running concurrently is an exhibition of paintings by STC art instructor Pedro Perez on the first floor of the library. The series of paintings come after Perez’s half-year sabbatical in Spain, Italy and France. In this exhibition, the artist invites his close friends and colleagues to sit in as a “saint” for each of the paintings.

A reception for both exhibitions will take place on Thursday, Oct. 3rd, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The artists will give a short talk and be available to answer questions. The exhibition, artist talk, and reception are free and open to the public.

McAllen Poet Laureate-Edward Vidaurre will be visiting South Texas College Libraries on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 11:30 am and Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at 6:00 pm at the Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room. He will also be visiting the South Texas Higher Education Center-La Joya (Jimmy Carter Early College High School) on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 10:00 am.

The South Texas College Art Gallery and Art Department will host its 13th annual ceramics exhibition and conference, “Gesture, Surface, Expression.”

The three-day South Texas Ceramic Showdown will begin with an opening reception on June 12, at the Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery and Art Building B from 6-8 p.m.

Workshops will continue with ceramic demonstrations June 13, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. as well as June 14 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be an artist lecture on June 14 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the South Texas College Library Rainbow Room.

“For the 2019 South Texas Ceramic Showdown, we will have more collaborations from schools near and far rolling in soon with continued participation from top notch ceramic programs that can open minds and eyes as to what might be possible when people decide to work together,” said Chris Leonard, Ceramic Showdown organizer and STC Ceramics Professor.

The event includes a full display of ceramic work by distinguished ceramicists George McCauley and Melissa Mencini. Ceramic work from 15 universities and community colleges across the U.S. will be displayed at the event.

“Speaking of working together, we are very happy to have George McCaulay, the longtime Helena, Montana clay artist team up with now Austin’s Melissa Mencini and get down our way to show and show us their similar yet different approaches to making and function. Once again if you miss it you’ll miss out,” Leonard said.

Earth Day Movie Screening “Chasing Coral”

Please join us Earth Day, April 22, 2019 at 10:00 am at the Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room.  Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world. The film took more than three years to shoot and is the result of 500+ hours of underwater footage, coral bleaching submissions from volunteers in 30 countries, as well as support from more than 500 people in various locations around the world.
