Fierce and Fearless: Patsy Takemoto Mink with Dr. Judy Tzu-Chun Wu

STC Library is honored to host Organization of American Historians Distinguished Speaker Dr. Judy Tzu-Chun Wu for an informative webinar on the history of Title IX’s namesake, Congresswoman Patsy Mink. A visionary leader and pioneer in education reform, Mink wrote the law in part as a response to the adversities she faced as a woman during her own education experience.

Dr. Wu recently published Fierce and Fearless: Patsy Takemoto Mink, First Woman of Color in Congress alongside Mink’s daughter, Gwendolyn Mink.

Stained Glass Museum: Día De Los Muertos

South Texas College partners with Gelman Stained Glass Museum for a two-day Día De Los Muertos celebration.

The STC Library Art Gallery will kick off the celebration with a live webinar on Tuesday, November 1, at 11:30 am. The presentation will introduce the museum and the history of its stained glass collection, commemorating parishioners from over 100 years ago, and bringing their stories back to life. Admission is free and open to the public. If you missed it in person, view now on our YouTube:

The following Wednesday, November 2, at 6:00 pm, the Gelman Stained Glass Museum will host an in-person celebration and talk for Día de Los Muertos, a day in Mexican culture reserved for prayer and remembering friends and family members who have passed. Attendees may bring candles, flowers, and candies for this memorial. STC students can attend the museum event at a discounted rate.

Transgender Protections under Title IX

South Texas College Library is partnering with the Department for Institutional Equity to present a series of events celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the US federal civil rights law that was enacted as part of the Education Amendments of 1972.

For this special Zoom webinar, we’ll be looking into how Title IX helps transgender students and what changes we can expect in the near future. Join us for a discussion with time for Q&A with staff attorney Andrew Ortiz from the Transgender Law Center. Registration is required, however participants will be able to ask questions anonymously through the Zoom platform. This event is free and open to all.

Joshua RivedalSeptember is National Suicide Awareness month. STC Library invites our students, faculty, staff, and community to join us for a presentation on how mental wellness is attainable and suicide is preventable. Our presenter, Joshua Rivedal, is the founder and creative director of The i’Mpossible Project. As a public speaker and educator, his primary focus is on suicide prevention and mental health; speeches and seminars on his experiences as a survivor of suicide loss, an attempt survivor, an abuse survivor, and youth suicide prevention—often paired with standup comedy or his one-man show Kicking My Blue Genes in the Butt (based on his book The Gospel According to Josh).
