In commemoration of Día de los Muertos, come hear about the different (and sometimes startling) roots of Mexican American culture. What do our antepasados (ancestors) have to say to us? Do they speak only through sugar skulls and the movie “Coco”, or can they tell Mexican Americans where they’re going by showing them where they’ve been?  Mr. Gilberto Reyes Jr, will be presenting.

ALTAR: Cruzando Fronteras, Building Bridges

A documentary film directed by Paola Zaccaria and Daniele Basilio (2009). Research, script and executive production: Paola Zaccaria. Produced by Università di Bari and Regione Puglia. Assessorato al Mediterraneo.

In this documentary on Gloria Anzaldúa, the effort has been to document how her creative mind worked visually, how she was interested in art, and consequently her influence on women artists. After having gone through Anzaldúa’s papers (published and unpublished works, graphic works, collection of posters, buttons and t-shirts, etc.) collected at Austin University, Texas, I have been able to map her links with artists, activists and cultural centers and interviewed women who were inspired by her thinking and poetics (such as Liliana Wilson, Santa Barraza, Juana Alicia, Amalia-Mesa Bains, Antonia Castañeda, Betita Martinez, Graciela Sanchez, Gloria Ramirez, Irene Reti, and al.). We have also shot articrafts, photographies, video, painting, murales inspired to other artists by her poetics and theory of la frontera.

On the Texas borderlands in McAllen, Mission, and Hidalgo (shot in April 2008, before the actual building of the wall), we captured the material passageways between Mexican and American borders along the Rio Grande-Rio Bravo River which were the source for the texture of crossing which makes her work so special (insider guide: Daniel García Ordaz ).
A special attention has been devoted to the poet’s altares reposited in the University Library of Santa Cruz, CA (curator: Irene Reti), which were an integral part of her spiritual life and creative process as a writer and may be the best picture to visualize the frame of her creative process.

South Texas College Library and Art Department partner to offer exhibits in Rio Grande City.

Q & A and Reception: September 26th at 11:30 a.m.

South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery and Art Department partner to bring rotating exhibits and art talks to the Starr County region. In this first collaboration, local artist Jose Suarez displays nine of his paintings in the upstairs corridor gallery of the STC Starr County Academic Building.

Suarez attended South Texas College after graduation from Juarez-Lincoln High School in La Joya and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In a baroque style that is rich in realism and dramatic lighting, Suarez paints theatrical scenes inspired by his life in the Rio Grande Valley.

A talk with the artist will take place on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 11:30 AM at the Starr County Campus Academic Building E, 142 FM 3167 in Rio Grande City, TX. Light refreshments will be provided. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibit opened on Sept. 10th and runs through Dec. 6, 2019.

STC’s Library Art Gallery Program organizes exhibitions and educational programs to engage student understanding of art, support academic curriculum, and inspire continued education through direct engagement with artists, scholars, and original works of art.

Black History Month Lecture Series

February is nationally recognized as Black History Month, South Texas College Libraries is proud to present Ms. Virginia Cumberbatch and Ms. Leslie Blair on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 10:00 am at the Starr County Campus Library, then at 6:00 pm at the Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room.  They will be speaking to us about their book “As We Saw It: The Story of Integration at the University of Texas at Austin”   In 2016, the University of Texas at Austin celebrated two important milestones: the thirtieth anniversary of the Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights and the sixtieth anniversary of the first black undergraduate students to enter the university. These historic moments aren’t just special; they are relevant to current conversations and experiences on college campuses across the country. The story of integration at UT against the backdrop of the Jim Crow South is complex and momentous—a story that necessitates understanding and sharing. Likewise, this narrative is inextricably linked to current conversations about students’ negotiations of identity and place in higher education .

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month which is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. The Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, whether we realize it or not. National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity, provide them with the tools and resources needed to stay safe online, and increase the resiliency of the Nation in the event of a cyber incident.

The South Texas College Library joins libraries nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.

The South Texas College Library is celebrating National Library Week by hosting Open House events at each campus library. The events are free and open to the public.

Women’s History Month Jovita Gonzalez Lecture Series

March is Nationally recognized as Women’s History Month, South Texas College Libraries will be hosting several events to celebrate Women’s History Month.  We begin with Ms. Barbara Cigarroa, Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 6:00 pm at the Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room.  She will be speaking to us about her book “A Mexican Dream and Other Compositions”  presents a rare collection of interwoven essays chronicling the fascinating history of the Cigarroa family and their influence on the Texas-Mexico border landscape.

Barbara González Cigarroa brings to life stories of her ancestors and other family members, including: Rebecca Iriarte, who raised her five children during the Mexican Revolution of 1910; Judge Manuel J. Raymond, one of the last of the border patrones who expertly navigated contrasting cultures across border lines; Henry B. González, US Congressman and the first Mexican American elected to the Texas Senate during a time of blatant racial discrimination; Dr. Joaquin González Cigarroa Jr., a revered physician and education activist; Dr. Francisco Cigarroa, pediatric transplant surgeon and former chancellor of the University of Texas system; Barbara Flores Cigarroa, a mother of ten whose values and resolve inspired her children and many grandchildren to excel in the finest universities and beyond.  In presenting richly detailed vignettes with keen observation and grace, Cigarroa offers captivating and original insights not only into her family’s remarkable story, but also into the beauty of the extraordinary traits and enduring spirit of the people of our Texas borderlands

We continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, Dr. Sandra Ledesma will be presenting her book, “Bombolai” on Monday, March 19, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Mid-Valley Campus Auditorium (G-191), then at 6:00 pm at the Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room.  We conclude with at the Starr County Campus Auditorium, Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at 1:00 pm. Her book is a  collection of funny stories, that make you laugh, think and reflect. The stories are somewhat feminist, but with warm love with the many teachings from ancestors and semi-modern Mexican wit that strengthens wisdom and the desire to live life fearlessly with not too much or a lot on hand.
