STC Starr County Campus exhibit explores pattern and modern imagerySouth Texas College’s Starr County Campus Library Art Gallery presents “Tejanx Borderz,” an exhibit featuring paintings by Mayra Zamora. The exhibit opens Tuesday, February 18 and will be on view through Friday, October 9, 2020 at the Starr County Campus Library, located at 142 FM 3167 in Rio Grande City. Admission is free and open to the public.

Mayra Zamora was born in Austin and raised in a small town of Tivoli, Texas. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi. Zamora focuses on what she considers the most important elements of art; line, shape, and color, while incorporating Mexican-American iconography.

Texas Poet Laureate-Emmy Perez

Emmy Pérez will visit three of South Texas College’s campuses, starting with a visit on Monday, April 13, 2020, at 10:00 am,  at the STARR Campus Library Event Room K1.200, Tuesday, April 14, 2020 she will visit Mid-Valley Campus Library BI Lab E1.106  at 1:00 pm and concluding at Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room at 6:00 pm.

Emmy Pérez, Texas Poet Laureate 2020, has lived in the Texas borderlands for the past 19+ years, the first six in El Paso where she has family roots before she moved to McAllen where she currently lives. She is the author of the poetry collections With the River on Our Face (University of Arizona Press) and Solstice (Swan Scythe Press). A volume of her New and Selected poems is forthcoming from TCU Press, Texas Poet Laureate series.

Jovita Gonzalez Lecture Series Presents: Dr. Brenda Sendejo

Writer and scholar Dr. Brenda Sendejo will be visiting South Texas College this March during our Jovita Gonzalez Lecture Series.

Dr. Sendejo will visit three of South Texas College’s campuses, starting with a visit on March 4, 2020, at 1:00 pm, she will be at the Mid-Valley Campus Library, then she will visit Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room at 6:00 pm. On March 5, 2020 at 10:00 am, Dr. Sendejo will conclude her visit at the Starr County Campus Library.

Dr. Sendejo is a Chicana/Tejana feminist anthropologist who researches spiritual activism and the Chicana feminist movement in Texas. Her book manuscript in progress is titled, The Face of God Has Changed: Chicana Feminism and the Politics of Spirituality in the Borderlands. Sendejo employs feminist and decolonial pedagogies and methodologies as an educator-scholar and Director of the Latina History Project, an intergenerational oral history/digital archival project that documents Chicana/Latina feminism and activism in Texas since the 1960s. She is a contributor to Chicana Movidas: New Narratives of Activism and Feminism in the Movement Era, edited by Maylei Blackwell, Maria Cotera, and Dionne Espinoza (UT Press, 2018). In that essay Sendejo examines the intellectual genealogy of Chicana feminism and its roots in Austin, Texas. Sendejo currently serves as Associate Professor and Chair of Feminist Studies at Southwestern University, and affiliate faculty in Anthropology, Latin American and Border Studies, and Race and Ethnicity Studies

Her research explores how prominent Mexican American writers of Mexican descent, such as Jovita González, used literature to respond to the dominative history of the United States.

In commemoration of Día de los Muertos, come hear about the different (and sometimes startling) roots of Mexican American culture. What do our antepasados (ancestors) have to say to us? Do they speak only through sugar skulls and the movie “Coco”, or can they tell Mexican Americans where they’re going by showing them where they’ve been?  Mr. Gilberto Reyes Jr, will be presenting.

The  Library Services presents “José de la Luz Saenz Veterans Lecture Series” an author talk followed by a book signing with Ms. Susan Meissner, her book entitled “The Last Year of the War“.  The event will take place, Monday, November 18, 2019 at 10:00 am at the STARR Campus Library and 6:00 pm at the Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room.

South Texas College Library and Art Department partner to offer exhibits in Rio Grande City.

Q & A and Reception: September 26th at 11:30 a.m.

South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery and Art Department partner to bring rotating exhibits and art talks to the Starr County region. In this first collaboration, local artist Jose Suarez displays nine of his paintings in the upstairs corridor gallery of the STC Starr County Academic Building.

Suarez attended South Texas College after graduation from Juarez-Lincoln High School in La Joya and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In a baroque style that is rich in realism and dramatic lighting, Suarez paints theatrical scenes inspired by his life in the Rio Grande Valley.

A talk with the artist will take place on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 11:30 AM at the Starr County Campus Academic Building E, 142 FM 3167 in Rio Grande City, TX. Light refreshments will be provided. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibit opened on Sept. 10th and runs through Dec. 6, 2019.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month which is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. The Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, whether we realize it or not. National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity, provide them with the tools and resources needed to stay safe online, and increase the resiliency of the Nation in the event of a cyber incident.

Please join us at our four of our South Texas College Libraries for a presentation about the resources you need to stay safe and secure online.

The South Texas College Library joins libraries nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.

The South Texas College Library is celebrating National Library Week by hosting Open House events at each campus library. The events are free and open to the public.

South Texas College exhibits artwork by Roma High School students
South Texas College’s Starr County Campus Library Art Gallery partners with Roma High School to present its annual Roma High School Art Exhibition from June 5 to August 10, 2017. The display features works of art by students of Roma High School.

The exhibit will be on display at STC’s Starr County Campus Library (Bldg. F), located at 142 FM 3167 in Rio Grande City. Admission is free and open to the public.

“Every year submissions are always different from the last, reinforcing Roma’s reputation as an incubator for highly inventive art students,” said Gina Otvos, South Texas College Library Art Gallery Associate. “We’re excited to see this collaboration with Roma High School continue into its ninth year.”

The exhibit features mixed media artwork by Roma High School students of all grade levels.

STC’s Library Art Gallery exhibits regional, national and international artwork, explores new visions and theories of creativity, and introduces innovative artistic expressions to the South Texas region.
