Author Talk for Hector P. Garcia Day at Pecan Library

Every third Wednesday of September, the day is designated Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day.  (Learn more about Dr. Hector P. Garcia here.)

THIS Wednesday, Sept 21st at 6:00 PM, scholar Ignacio Garcia will give a presentation at the Pecan Campus Library in honor of this Civil Rights leader.  The lecture will be entitled “Pursuing Justice: What Would Dr. Hector P. Garcia Have Thought of Today’s Politics?” and he will be signing books afterwards.

Ignacio Garcia is a well regarded scholar that teaches Western and Latino history at Brigham Young University.  He has written five books including United We Win (check availability), Chicanismo (check availability), Viva Kennedy (check availability), and Hector P. Garcia: In Relentless Pursuit of Justice (check availability).  These books and his most recent book White But Not Equal (check availability) can be found at the STC Library.

Event: 150th Anniversary of Mexican-American Involvement in the Civil War

libevents-vaqueros All over the United States people are using the word sesquicentennial to describe the 150th anniversary of the Civil War taking place this year.

The STC Library and the Mexican American Studies Program will be commemorating the anniversary with a book talk by historian Dr. Jerry Thompson, author of Vaqueros in Blue and Gray and many other books discussing the South Texas involvement in the Civil War.

On Monday, April 11, Dr. Thompson will be talking at the MidValley Campus Library and at the Pecan Campus Library.  Books will be available for sale, and the author will sign books after his talk.  His other books include The Civil War and the Southwest as well as Cortina: Defending the Mexican Name in Texas.

Howdy Readers! If you’ve wandered the halls of the Pecan Campus Library this June, you may have noticed our two fantastic new art installations! If you haven’t, come by the second floor and check out these exhibits. They are definitely something different, and it’s free!

One of these exhibits, hosted within the Library Art Gallery, is the Ceramics Showdown, and will only be available for viewing until July 1st:

Documentary for Mexican Revolution Centennial Nov. 18

Join the STC Library at Pecan to celebrate the one hundred year anniversary of the Mexican Revolution with a special documentary created by Hispanic Research Center at ASU.  The movie will be introduced by Dr. Trinidad Gonzales, history instructor at STC.

In addition to the movie, also, go by the library to check out a special display featuring books about the Mexican Revolution.

Movie “Touch of Evil” on Nov. 16

libevents-Movies11Come to the STC Pecan Campus to watch the Orson Welles classic Touch of Evil starring Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh.

This special screening will feature an introduction and a closing Q&A with Dr. George Díaz, STC History Instructor.  The movie also connects to the exhibit MEXtasy up at the Pecan Campus Art Gallery by William Nericcio.

Co-writer of the Film “Machete” to talk at Pecan Library

libevents-alvaro On Tuesday October 5 at 7:00 pm screenwriter Alvaro Rodriguez will visit the Pecan campus library to discuss the movie Machete.

Rodriguez is a Valley native and screenwriter whose work includes MACHETE, SHORTS and FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: THE HANGMAN’S DAUGHTER.   He has worked as a reporter for The McAllen Monitor, and is the author of a series of short stories set along the Texas–‐Mexico border, many of which have been published in journals including El Paso’s Bordersenses and The Mesquite Review. He will be a panelist at Austin Film Festival in October 2010.

Celebrate Banned Books Week at STC

Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment.  Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

At the MidValley and Pecan campus libraries, displays are up showing books that have been banned in the past.  In addition, the Pecan campus library will be showing the movie Salt of the Earth, an American classic film, but at the time time of it’s release, the movie had a lot of trouble getting released. The movie will be shown on Sept. 29 at 12pm at F-102.

Celebrate Hector P. Garcia Day at the Library

In 2009, the State of Texas decreed the third Wednesday of September to be Hector P. Garcia Day.  In honor, the STC Library will be screening a documentary about his life.  Dr. Hector P. Garcia was born in Mercedes.  He was a doctor, World War II veteran, civil rights advocate, and founder of the American G.I. Forum.  He was a U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Frida screening Aug. 5th

libevents-Movies6The Pecan and MidValley Libraries will be showing the movie Frida.  The movie is based on the Hayden Herrera biography, and was nominated for six Oscars, and it won two.

“Salma Hayek plays the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, whose tempestuous life with her unfaithful husband, muralist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), drives the story of Frida. Maverick director Julie Taymor (Titus, the Broadway stage production of The Lion King) pulls out a wealth of gorgeous visuals to capture everything from the horrific bus accident that damaged Kahlo’s spine to her and Rivera’s trip to New York City, where Rivera’s political leanings ruptured a commission from the Rockefeller family.  Taymor’s dynamic energy and Kahlo’s forceful personality give Frida genuine emotional impact. Summer Displays

Book Displays, Our Collections, Pecan Campus

Due to Hurricane Alex, the Displays committee has extended June’s displays until the end of July. This will give students, faculty, staff, and patrons an opportunity to view books about how to improve their communication skills such as public speaking, interpersonal, organizational, small group, persuasion etc.

We also have a library display up about Men’s Health. The books for this specific display will help men who are dealing with physical, mental issues, and taboo topics that society rarely talks about. These books allow our STC campus and community to become aware of struggles men deal with on a day-to-day basis and a look at how to solve those issues.

In addition, committee members put up three additional displays that celebrated LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered) Month, Ceramics, and Hurricane Awareness Month. Check them out.
