National Library Week @ STC 2016 Open House

The South Texas College Library joins libraries nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.

“Service to the South Texas College community has always been the focus of the library,” said Cody Gregg, Dean of Library and Learning Support Services. “While this aspect has never changed, libraries have grown and evolved in how they provide for the needs of every member of their community.”

The South Texas College Library is celebrating National Library Week by hosting Open House events at each campus library. The events are free and open to the public.

On April 13 from11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at STC’s Technology Campus Library located at 3700 W. Military Highway in McAllen, attendees will enjoy a screening of the movie The 33, as well as games, drawings, popcorn and snacks.

On April 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 1: 00 p.m. at the college’s Mid-Valley Campus Library located at 400 N. Border in Weslaco, events will include a screening of the movie The Good Dinosaur, pictures with college mascot Jerry the Jaguar, popcorn and snacks, a photo booth, a contest, and a “Pursuing Education” Fair.

On April 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Starr County Campus Library located at 142 FM 3167 in Rio Grande City, activities include the movie showing of Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos, popcorn and snacks, games, Jerry the Jaguar, a photo both and information tables.

On April 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at STC’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus Library located at 1101 E. Vermont in McAllen, attendees will be treated to the movie showing of The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2, giveaways, popcorn and snacks, games, scavenger hunt, and information tables.

On April 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at STC’s Pecan Campus Library located at 3201 West Pecan Boulevard in McAllen, festivities will include an information fair, a scavenger hunt with prizes, and the showing of Star Wars the Force Awakens, as well as popcorn and snacks, games, and a photo-booth.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.

Movie: Inside Out

“Inside Out” is about emotions run wild in the mind of a little girl who is uprooted from her peaceful life in the Midwest and forced to move to San Francisco in this Pixar adventure from director Pete Docter (Up, Monsters Inc.). Young Riley was perfectly content with her life when her father landed a new job in San Francisco, and the family moved across the country. Now, as Riley prepares to navigate a new city and attend a new school, her emotional headquarters becomes a hot bed of activity. As Joy (voice of Amy Poehler) attempts to keep Riley feeling happy and positive about the move, other emotions like Fear (voice of Bill Hader), Anger (voice of Lewis Black), Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) make the transition a bit more complicated. Author: Jason Buchananyoung Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness – conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.

Harmony

South Texas College’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus Library presents “Harmony,” an exhibit featuring digital artworks by Rolando D. Garza. The exhibit opens Thursday, June 19, 2014 and will be on view through Friday, Aug. 8. An artist talk will be held on July 3 at 3:30 p.m. at the college’s NAH Campus, located at 1101 E. Vermont Ave. in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.

Garza’s playful digital works are greatly influenced by science fiction, geometry, nature, movies and music. He says that his art is constantly evolving and believes that by promoting the arts he will help make the Valley a more beautiful place.

“Garza’s work is fresh, bold and fun,” said Dawn Haughey, STC Library Art Gallery associate. “Whether we realize it or not, digital art is a huge part of our everyday lives. We see it everywhere we go, on billboards, the internet, even on packaged food items. It is important to exhibit digital artwork, as well as more traditional painted or photographed works, so that it can be appreciated and recognized as a true art form.”

Garza received a degree in Graphic Design from the University of Texas-Pan American. His background includes work in engineering, computer science, psychology, sculpture and art.

STC’s Library Art Gallery exhibits regional, national and international artwork, explores new visions and theories of creativity, and introduces innovative artistic expressions to the South Texas region.

On April 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at STC’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus Library located at 1101 E. Vermont in McAllen, attendees will be treated to the showing of Gravity, as well as a scavenger hunt, games, and prizes.

On April 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at STC’s Pecan Campus Library located at 3201 West Pecan Blvd. in McAllen, festivities will include an information fair, a scavenger hunt with prizes, and the showing of Gravity.

Picturing America

South Texas College’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus Library presents “Picturing America.” The exhibit opens Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 and will be on view through Friday, May 9. The STC NAH Campus is located at 1101 E. Vermont Ave. in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.

Picturing America is an initiative of the We The People program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program was launched in 2002 and seeks to strengthen the teaching, study and understanding of America’s history and founding principles, according to the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Bruce Cole.

Unconscious Landscape

South Texas College’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus Library presents “Unconscious Landscape,” an exhibit featuring artworks by Delvis Cortez. The exhibit opens Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013 and will be on view through Friday, Dec. 6. An artist talk will be held on Oct. 3 at 6:30pm at the college’s NAH Campus, located at 1101 E. Vermont Ave. in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.

Cortez’s current body of work was created through a transferring process called Decalcomania. This is a process in which diluted oil paint is spread across a large glass surface, and the canvas is pressed to the surface and then carefully peeled away. The technique produces smudges and blots of color which suggest turbulent skies, landscapes and/or abstract humanoid forms.

“Cortez’s recent work expresses the feeling of freedom and spontaneity that paint is so capable of achieving,” said Dawn Haughey, STC Library Art Gallery associate. “The fluid composition and muted tones of the work create a relaxing and introspective experience for the viewer.”

Cortez received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas-Pan American. He currently instructs painting parties at the Weslaco Museum.

Library Week is that time of the year when we stop and appreciate what libraries and librarians have contributed to our schools and communities. And South Texas College will celebrate Library Week with a number of activities at all five of its campuses.

Celebrated nation wide, this year’s theme is “Communities Thrive @ Your Library.” In tough economic times, libraries give free access to books, DVDs, computers, and research assistance. College puts spotlight on artistry of local, self-taught octogenarian

South Texas College’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus Library Art Gallery is proud to present “Dreamlands of Pedro Reynoso” featuring a collection of acrylic and oil on canvas paintings by self-taught artist, Pedro Reynoso. The exhibit opens Friday, May 8 at STC’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus Library Art Gallery with an Art Talk at 1 p.m. given by Jennifer Cahn, Curator at the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art. An opening reception will immediately follow from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The exhibit runs through July 3, 2009. STC’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus Library Art Gallery is located at 1101 E. Vermont Ave. in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.Currently 87 years old, Reynoso took up painting at the age of 65 after his diagnosis with cancer and later Alzheimer’s disease.

“Reynoso relies on his vivid imagination and a fluid, sensitive use of color,” said Cahn. “Most of the scenes in the exhibition are drawn from the artist’s youthful memories of Mexico, from which he creates vibrant landscapes expressing a sophisticated eye and a tender nostalgia for his birthplace.”

“The exhibit is a multi-tasking force helping us all see that creativity is a vital force of self-expression, positive memory experience and also an incentive for capturing a sense of therapy and healing,” said David Freeman, curator and programs coordinator for STC’s Library Art Gallery Program. “Reynoso is a self taught artist yet his vision is incredibly astute and rich in an astonishing parallel with many of the mainstream styles and genres of art of the 20th century. There is evidence of a common intuitive phenomenon within the technique, process and creative effort of Reynoso’s work and our cultural artistic art world of today.

“His work reflects the look of surrealism, impressionism and expressionism even though he knows nothing of these movements,” continued Freeman. “There is a vast wealth of understanding color, texture and form that mirrors and defines his emotional feelings of the day and reflects the landscapes of childhood and his present day experience. He expresses in his work that he is in control and alive, and creating in an almost defiant manner in resistance to challenges that he faces. It is stated that wherever there is creativity there is God; Reynosa lets us see that where there is creativity there is also faith that art can heal.”

South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery Program exhibits regional, national and international artwork, explores new visions and theories of creativity, and introduces innovative artistic expressions to the South Texas region.
