STC’s Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery hosts an exhibition of site-specific installation.

Reception & Performance: March 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. | Lecture: 11:30 a.m.

South Texas College’s Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery presents “The Wound of the Malinches,” an installation exhibition by ceramic artist Leticia Lowry-Garcilazo. On Tuesday, March 10, the library will host a lecture at 11:30 in E 1.106 followed by a performance and reception at 6:00 p.m. in E 1.210 located at 400 N Border Ave in Weslaco, Texas. Admission is free and open to the public.

Leticia Lowry-Garcilazo recently completed her Master’s in Fine Arts degree at The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley. Through her work she is an advocate for women’s rights.

About her work Leticia Lowry-Garcilazo says, “I was a spectator and I am a survivor of violence. I was tired and overwhelmed from being blamed. I learned to focus and deal with my anger through my work in the arts confronting and advocating for gender equality and women empowerment.”

The exhibit opens January 28 and runs through April 19, 2020.

STC’s Library Art Gallery Program organizes exhibitions and educational programs to engage student understanding of art and its role in culture, support academic curriculum, and inspire continued education through direct engagement with artists, scholars, and original works of art.

Dia de los Muertos: Los Siglos Nos Llaman. Que Nos Dicen?

In commemoration of Día de los Muertos, come hear about the different (and sometimes startling) roots of Mexican American culture. What do our antepasados (ancestors) have to say to us? Do they speak only through sugar skulls and the movie “Coco”, or can they tell Mexican Americans where they’re going by showing them where they’ve been?  Mr. Gilberto Reyes Jr, will be presenting.

Family Reading Night 2019

Want to find some fun entertainment for the entire family? Your local library is a good place to start. And you can get to know your South Texas College Mid-Valley Campus Library at its annual “Family Reading Night” on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The free event, which is open to the public, is held in conjunction with Reading Week.

“We want to help children develop a love of reading and to encourage Valley parents to read with their children,” said Lillian Carrillo, Mid-Valley Campus Librarian. “Our college’s libraries are a gateway to the community, and we hope that participants will not only take advantage of these fun activities, but also learn more about some of the great services that the college has to offer.”

The night’s festivities include book distribution by South Texas Literacy Coalition, entertainer Teensy Weensy the Clown, face painting, Census 2020 and a variety of arts and crafts activities for the entire family offered by The Storybook Garden, and Mayor Joe V. Sánchez Public Library. As an added bonus, fun opportunities will be featured by the college’s Architectural & Engineering Design Technology Program, Office Administration Program, Public Administration Program, Construction, Electrician & HVACR Program, Center for Learning Excellence, Learning Commons & Open Labs, Mid Valley Education Club, Jerry the Jaguar, and a special photo booth.

While on campus, attendees have the opportunity to use the library’s free services or anyone 18 years or older may sign up for a Community Library Card, which allows community members to check out books at any of STC’s libraries for free.

ALTAR: Cruzando Fronteras, Building Bridges

A documentary film directed by Paola Zaccaria and Daniele Basilio (2009). Research, script and executive production: Paola Zaccaria. Produced by Università di Bari and Regione Puglia. Assessorato al Mediterraneo.

In this documentary on Gloria Anzaldúa, the effort has been to document how her creative mind worked visually, how she was interested in art, and consequently her influence on women artists. After having gone through Anzaldúa’s papers (published and unpublished works, graphic works, collection of posters, buttons and t-shirts, etc.) collected at Austin University, Texas, I have been able to map her links with artists, activists and cultural centers and interviewed women who were inspired by her thinking and poetics (such as Liliana Wilson, Santa Barraza, Juana Alicia, Amalia-Mesa Bains, Antonia Castañeda, Betita Martinez, Graciela Sanchez, Gloria Ramirez, Irene Reti, and al.). We have also shot articrafts, photographies, video, painting, murales inspired to other artists by her poetics and theory of la frontera.

On the Texas borderlands in McAllen, Mission, and Hidalgo (shot in April 2008, before the actual building of the wall), we captured the material passageways between Mexican and American borders along the Rio Grande-Rio Bravo River which were the source for the texture of crossing which makes her work so special (insider guide: Daniel García Ordaz ).
A special attention has been devoted to the poet’s altares reposited in the University Library of Santa Cruz, CA (curator: Irene Reti), which were an integral part of her spiritual life and creative process as a writer and may be the best picture to visualize the frame of her creative process.

New exhibition at STC’s Weslaco campus explores identity between two cultures.

Artist Lecture and Reception: Oct. 21, 2019 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The South Texas College Mid-Valley Library Art Gallery presents “Fragmentos y Suturas,” an art exhibition featuring artwork by José Villalobos.

The exhibit opens on Thursday, September 5th and will be available to view until October 21, 2019, at the STC Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery, Building E 1.210 located at 400 N Border in Weslaco, TX.

José Villalobos grew up in El Paso, Texas. In his artwork, Villalobos transforms seemingly everyday objects into artwork that traverses gender and orientation as it exists living between two cultures.

José Villalobos will give a lecture about his work on Monday, October 21, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the STC Mid-Valley Campus Library. A performance and reception will follow that same evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The exhibition, artist talk, and reception are free and open to the public.

Pride Month Lecture Series Presents: Gabriel Sanchez

South Texas College Libraries proudly presents Pride Month Lecture Series Guest Speaker, Gabriel Sanchez.

Gabriel Sanchez is a native of the Rio Grande Valley who grew up in Starr and Hidalgo Counties. He has a bachelor’s degree in American Studies and Sociology from Marlboro College in Vermont. For the past three years, Gabriel has been conducting research and collecting oral history interviews on the history of the Rio Grande Valley’s LGBTQIA+ communities and the activism, social spaces, stories, and art important to this community. Gabriel is currently collaborating with One Scene Studios to create Pansy Pachanga- a documentary film on the history of the Valley’s LGBTQIA+ community set to be released in 2019.

National Poetry Month Lecture Series Presents Traci Brimhall

South Texas College Libraries proudly presents National Poetry Month Lecture Series Ms. Traci Brimhall.

Traci Brimhall is the author of three books of poetry: Saudade (Copper Canyon); Our Lady of the Ruins (W.W. Norton), winner of the Barnard Women Poets Prize; and Rookery (Southern Illinois University Press), winner of the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award; as well as the forthcoming poetry-essay hybrid collection Come the Slumberless to the Land of Nod (Copper Canyon). Her poems and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, Georgia Review, Poetry, Southern Review, and Best American Poetry. She’s an associate professor of creative writing at Kansas State University and lives in Manhattan, KS.
