In commemoration of Día de los Muertos, come hear about the different (and sometimes startling) roots of Mexican American culture. What do our antepasados (ancestors) have to say to us? Do they speak only through sugar skulls and the movie “Coco”, or can they tell Mexican Americans where they’re going by showing them where they’ve been? Mr. Gilberto Reyes Jr, will be presenting.

Family Reading Night 2019

Want to find some fun entertainment for the entire family? Your local library is a good place to start. And you can get to know your South Texas College Mid-Valley Campus Library at its annual “Family Reading Night” on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The free event, which is open to the public, is held in conjunction with Reading Week.

“We want to help children develop a love of reading and to encourage Valley parents to read with their children,” said Lillian Carrillo, Mid-Valley Campus Librarian. “Our college’s libraries are a gateway to the community, and we hope that participants will not only take advantage of these fun activities, but also learn more about some of the great services that the college has to offer.”

The night’s festivities include book distribution by South Texas Literacy Coalition, entertainer Teensy Weensy the Clown, face painting, Census 2020 and a variety of arts and crafts activities for the entire family offered by The Storybook Garden, and Mayor Joe V. Sánchez Public Library. As an added bonus, fun opportunities will be featured by the college’s Architectural & Engineering Design Technology Program, Office Administration Program, Public Administration Program, Construction, Electrician & HVACR Program, Center for Learning Excellence, Learning Commons & Open Labs, Mid Valley Education Club, Jerry the Jaguar, and a special photo booth.

While on campus, attendees have the opportunity to use the library’s free services or anyone 18 years or older may sign up for a Community Library Card, which allows community members to check out books at any of STC’s libraries for free.

McAllen Poet Laureate-Edward Vidaurre will be visiting South Texas College Libraries on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 11:30 am and Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at 6:00 pm at the Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room. He will also be visiting the South Texas Higher Education Center-La Joya (Jimmy Carter Early College High School) on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 10:00 am.

Edward Vidaurre takes us with him on his life trip, from East LA to the Rio Grande Valley and the all the far reaching roots that accompany him in the form of ancestors, spirits, family, and other familiars. JAZzHOUSE is a base camp, and a life. We are invited in to share some food, some cafecito, or a glass of wine – to sit awhile and be grateful for every minute we are alive.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

September 17 is designated as Constitution Day to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787. The Federal Convention had first convened in May to revise the Articles of Confederation, but the need for an entirely new frame of government became clear. State delegates debated issues, such as federalism and representation, all through the summer as they drafted the articles of the new Constitution.

Constitution of the United States

Ratified in 1788, and in operation since 1789, for over two centuries the Constitution has remained in force because its framers wisely separated and balanced governmental powers to safeguard the interests of majority rule and minority rights, of liberty and equality, and of the federal and state governments. The Constitution has evolved through amendments to meet the changing needs of a nation now profoundly different from the eighteenth-century world in which its creators lived.

The United States enjoys a representative form of government, shaped by three separate branches as established in the Constitution:

Article I states that “All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives.”
Article II states that “The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America.”
Article III provides for a “judicial Power of the United States.”

Check available titles on the list and request any title that is not housed in your campus library by placing a hold on the item record in Discovery Search or by submitting a Campus to Campus request. The book will be delivered to your campus as soon as it is available.
