Starr County Campus presents the eighth annual Roma High School Art Exhibition

South Texas College’s Starr County Campus Library Art Gallery partners with Roma High School to present its annual Roma High School Art Exhibition from June 6 to August 12, 2016 with an exhibit reception on June 13th at 1 p.m. The display features works of art by students, who have studied under the tutelage of Roma High School art instructors Gabriela Gonzalez, department head; Mario Godinez, teacher; and Abilene Vargas, teacher.

The exhibit will be on display at STC’s Starr County Campus Library (Bldg. F), located at 142 FM 3167 in Rio Grande City. Admission is free and open to the public.

“The STC Library Art Gallery’s collaboration with Roma High School is still going strong and is now entering into its eighth year,” said Gina Otvos, South Texas College Art Gallery Associate. “Every year’s submissions are always different from the last, reinforcing Roma’s reputation as an incubator for highly inventive art students.”
The exhibit features mixed media artwork by Roma High School students of all grade levels.

The South Texas College (STC) Library Art Gallery celebrates its history with an exhibit from the Permanent Art Collection

STC’s Library Art Gallery celebrates eight years of building the college’s Permanent Art Collection with an exhibit at the Technology Campus. The exhibit opens Monday, June 13, 2016, and will be on view through Friday, Aug. 12, 2016. The STC Technology Campus Library Art Gallery is located at 3700 W. Military Highway in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibit features works of art that have been donated to STC, from 2008 to 2016, by various artists who have exhibited at one of the college’s five library art galleries in Hidalgo and Starr counties.

“It’s always interesting to be able to bring together our donated works of art into one exhibit,” said Max Garcia, South Texas College Librarian. “It creates a type of visual timeline of what we have exhibited over the years. We are always grateful for all of our amazing donations and are happy to share them with all of STC’s campuses so that everyone has a chance to enjoy them.”

Mixed-media artist, Xochi Solis, to spark Mid-Valley imaginations

The South Texas College Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery presents “We Must Build As If the Sand Were Stone,” an exhibit featuring small work and a site-specific installation by artist Xochi Solis. The exhibit opens Monday, January 25, and will be on view through March 28. The Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery is located in Bldg. E at 400 N. Border in Weslaco. Admission is free and open to the public.

“The Mid Valley Campus is honored to welcome such a skilled artist with a vast wealth of experience in her profession,” said Gina Otvos, STC art gallery associate. “Solis’ work is playful in color and form and is also intentional in technique. Her approach and extensive mixed-media art knowledge will undoubtedly spark the imagination of both professional and aspiring artists.”

In addition to the exhibit, an artist lecture and closing reception with Solis will be held at the STC Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery on Monday, March 28, at 6:00 p.m. The artist lecture and reception is also free and open to the public.

Originally from Austin, Texas, Xochi Solis received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). She is the director of events and public programming at the Visual Arts Center at UT Austin. Solis brings with her a wealth of both professional and artistic experience having worked in numerous galleries in Texas including Volitant Gallery, Art Palace and the Creative Research Lab, and was the executive director of the 2009 Texas Biennial.

Most notably, Solis has exhibited and participated in residencies in Los Angeles, Houston, Boulder, New York City, Oaxaca and Mexico City, MX and is trained in natural dying techniques for paper, which she utilizes in both her small works on museum board and her larger site-specific installations. Solis’ work is also featured in Collage: Contemporary Artists Hunt and Gather.

Xavier Perez is an art instructor, musician, and printmaker from McAllen, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas-Pan American in 2014 and blends Mexico’s rich tradition of printmaking with images from his contemporary life in his artwork.

Through her brightly painted images of Rio Grande Valley cemeteries, Beatriz Guzman Velasquez seeks to cherish and understand the changing landscape of memorials along the Mexico-Texas border acknowledging indigenous rituals, Spanish Catholicism, and American funeral practices. Guzman Velasquez earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Texas Pan-American. She has also studied at the New York Studio School and in San Miguel de Allende.

lag-southexpMcAllen, TX—Beginning November 3, 2015 the STC Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery, will present “Southern Exposures,” an exhibition organized by the Valley Land Fund.

“Southern Exposures” is composed by award-winning photographs from the Valley Land Fund Southern Exposures Photo Contest.

The South Texas College Library Art Gallery presents “Southern Exposures” as a means to promote a way to create awareness of wildlife that exists in the Rio Grande Valley and ultimately to add value to that wildlife.

Virtuosa BannerSouth Texas College’s Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery presents “Virtuosa,” an exhibit featuring paintings by Gaby Rico. The exhibit opens Thursday, Sept. 24 with an artist lecture at 6 p.m. and will be on view through Dec. 10, 2012 at the Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery located at 400 N. Border in Weslaco. Admission is free and open to the public.

“Gaby Rico’s work is a delicate balance between the real and the abstract,” said STC Library Art Gallery Associate Gina Otvos. “While her skill in color usage and blending is truly spectacular, she is also able to ignite a variety of emotions through her bold style. Gaby Rico is a self-taught artist currently living in Edinburg, TX. She has exhibited prolifically throughout the Rio Grande Valley since 2006. Her work is an expressionistic, social self-portrait, where she transcends established art standards by mixing materials and techniques. In this exhibit Rico will explore the human condition through a series of self-portraits.

Still: An Art Exhibit

South Texas College’s Technology Campus Library presents “Still: An Art Exhibit,” featuring artworks by Sandra de la Fuente. The exhibit opens Thursday, September 8, 2015 with an artist lecture held on October 15 from 6-7pm to coincide with the International Wave of Light celebration. Artwork will be on view through December 7 at the Technology Campus Library, located at 3700 W. Military Hwy. in McAllen. Admission is free and open to the public.

“Still: An Art Exhibit” is a meditation on loss, tragedy, solitude, spirituality, and memory. Through the use of mix-media, artist Sandra de la Fuente explores feelings of profound personal depth. The challenging topic deals with the sudden passing of family and the pieces are used to convey a message to the viewer and translate the incomparable loss of a child. Media used includes ink, spray paint, oil sticks, acrylic paint and charcoal pencil.

“Sandra de la Fuente explores her own personal tragedy to bring understanding and awareness to our community,” said Gina Otvos, STC Library Art Gallery Associate. “Her use of various media and techniques produces a unique internal interactive experience.”

South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery partners with the college’s Visual Art Department and the University of Texas-Pan American in order to present the RGV’s eighth annual ceramics exhibition and conference, “Challenging Conventions: A South Texas Ceramic Showdown.” The full exhibition includes collaborative pieces from 12 universities and community colleges. The pieces will be at both the STC Library and UTPA’s Visual Art Gallery.

The exhibit will be on view from June 11-August 7, 2015. A special ceramic art talk by, Tom Belden of Central Arizona College and Gary Greenberg Clarion University of Pennsylvania, will take place on Thursday, June 11 from 5-6 p.m. just before the opening reception which is being held from 6-8 p.m. at STC’s Pecan Campus Library, located at 3201 West Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. The following day at UTPA there will be a free, two-day conference and workshop taking place on Friday, June 12 and ending Saturday, June 13 at UTPA’s Visual Arts Building Ceramics Lab. All activities are free and open to the public.

“We are back in action for our fifth go around of ceramic collaboration. There are a number of variables that we are putting in place with our own facilities being upgraded here at STC this summer so we are collaborating with UTPA to put on the show and workshop,” said Chris Leonard, STC ceramics instructor and exhibit/workshop organizer. “People across the state and even the nation are putting things in place and into kilns in order to make the show happen very soon.”

The conference includes clay demonstrations and talks by nationally recognized and distinguished ceramic artists, Tom Belden of Central Arizona College and Gary Greenberg of Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Both ceramicists are M.F.A. graduates of Arizona State University, and they bring with them over 40 years of experience exhibiting nationwide, teaching, and working in the medium. Among Tom Belden’s vast accomplishments, he was instrumental in establishing Central Arizona College’s Gallery, and he has served as gallery director and curator for the past fourteen years at Central Arizona College. Gary Greenberg’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the University of Missouri, Adams State College in Colorado and the Stretch Gallery in North Carolina to name a few. Greenberg serves as director of Disco Inferno, the tri-annual firings of the Clarion University wood-fired, anagama kiln.

“We are continuing with a paired show format; plus the institutional invite will be back along with a pair of visiting artists, Belden and Greenberg.” Leonard said. “It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be educational. It’s going to open some eyes and minds.”

Participating institutions include Texas A&M University-Kingsville, The University of Central Missouri, The University of Texas-San Antonio, Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Texas Tech University, The University of Texas at Brownsville, The University of Texas-Pan American, Kent State University, Mesa Community College, South Texas College, Tarrant County College, Cuyahoga Community College.
