Poet Simon Ortiz to visit on Nov. 1

South Texas College will celebrate Native American Heritage Month with a pair of presentations by guest author Dr. Simon J. Ortiz from Arizona State University on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012. Ortiz will appear at 2:00 pm at the Mid-Valley Campus Auditorium, Building G, Room 191, located at 400 North in Weslaco, and later in the day at the Pecan Campus Rainbow Room at 6 p.m. at the Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room, located at 3201 W. Pecan Blvd in McAllen.

He is one of the most respected and widely read Native American Poets in the U.S., and holds a Doctor of Letters from the University of New Mexico. He currently teaches at Arizona State University. Ortiz is also the founder and coordinator of the Indigenous Speakers Series, sponsored by ASU’s Department of English and American Indian Studies. His books include, “From Sand Creek,” “Woven Stone,” and the children’s book, “The People Shall Continue.”

A book signing will follow immediately after each presentation. The events are free and open to the public.
